Ranting About Games - Nintendo

Note: This article may or may not reflect the views of the other contributors to this blog. I haven't checked with them.

Personally, it feels like a lot of the games for the DS, and for the Wii to a certain extent, are collections of mini-games. I think that Nintendo is beginning to cater to the tastes of casual gamers to the exclusion of their old-school fans. Tycho from Penny Arcade put it quite eloquently in this strip. "We are rich as fuck. Here's a bunch of shit you don't care about."

It's not that I don't enjoy these types of games from time to time, because I do. The problem I have with Nintendo is the way they've essentially dumped their core audience, the audience who made them what they are, like a back-alley crack whore. As an extreme example, two of the "games" developed for the DS are 100 Classic Book Collection and Personal Trainer: Cooking. These aren't games; they're interactive books.

I would be fine with Nintendo producing these titles, if it were not the focus of their business model.
